Horace Mann Educators Corporation is headquartered in the capital city of Illinois. Springfield is the home and final resting place of President Abraham Lincoln, and is the medical hub for the region.


Springfield has a population of 114,694 (U.S. Bureau of Census, 2018).


The area economy is made up of a mix of public and private-sector employers, from state government institutions to premier health care and medical complexes. The community is home to two major hospitals and headquarters for over a dozen nationally known companies. Horace Mann is ranked as one of the largest employers in Springfield.


Springfield is at the center of politics with the state capitol complex and various political offices, along with city and county offices located in the downtown area. One of the highest ranking members of the U.S. Senate also calls Springfield home. Plus, President Barack Obama announced his candidacy for President and named his vice presidential choice on the steps of the Old State Capitol.


The city is also an educational hub for the region. There are over 30 public and private elementary and middle schools, and six public and private high schools located in the city limits. Three universities, a community college and several vocational training centers help prepare young people to further their education. Plus, the city is home to a medical university and a nursing school.

Springfield is easy to reach by car as it is located 200 miles south of Chicago and 100 miles northeast of St. Louis at the intersection of Interstates 55 and 72. There are also many transportation options available in the area, including a mass transit bus system, an Amtrak train stop, charter bus companies, and air transportation out of Springfield’s Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport.

Historic Sites

President Abraham Lincoln spent much of his political career in Springfield, so the community boasts several historic Lincoln sites; including the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, Lincoln Home and Neighborhood, Lincoln-Herndon Law Offices, and Lincoln Tomb. Other attractions include the Dana-Thomas House designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, the Old State Capitol, the Illinois State Capitol and the Executive Mansion.
