The benefits of exercise when you're older

In fact, physical activity has been found to be a contributor to increased longevity and that could mean adding years to your life.

Here are a few benefits of exercising and staying active, even as you age.

Enhanced flexibility, mobility and balance
By getting regular exercise, you increase strength. And those muscles that you exercise will be helping you maintain your balance, mobility and flexibility. Increased flexibility can mean better posture, and improved balance and mobility can help you prevent falls. Exercise can also help offset the effects of chronic conditions like arthritis.

Aid in maintaining or losing weight
It almost goes without saying, but exercise and strength gain can help older adults maintain their current weight or lose weight. Exercise also helps increase the metabolism and builds muscle that’s typically lost as we age.

Lessen the impact of chronic disease or illness
Adults who exercise can find it helps control blood pressure, improve their immune and digestive systems, and lower the risk for type 2 diabetes, obesity, heart disease, osteoporosis, certain cancers, and possibly even dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Improved self-confidence and mood
Besides physical benefits, the endorphins produced in the body during exercise can help improve mood, reduce stress and minimize feelings of depression and anxiety. Being active and strong can also improve self-confidence.

More restful sleep
Restful sleep is extremely important for overall health and wellness. Regular exercise can help promote deep sleep, which can result in having more energy throughout the day.

Brain health
Exercise has extremely beneficial effects on the brain. It can help improve brain functions like multitasking and creativity. As mentioned earlier, exercise can also help prevent memory loss, cognitive decline and dementia.
