Big changes in public service loan forgiveness provide big opportunities

What changed?

On Oct. 6, 2021, the U.S. Department of Education (ED) announced a change to PSLF program rules for a limited time due to the COVID-19 national emergency. From now until Oct. 31, 2022, you may receive credit for past payments made on loans that would otherwise not qualify for PSLF.

What does this mean?

Any prior student loan payments made while working full time for a qualifying employer (such as a public school) will count as a qualifying PSLF payment, regardless of loan type, repayment plan, or whether the payment was made in full or on time. Private loans and Parent PLUS loans do not qualify.

What next?

  1. Sign up for your Student Loan Solutions account. This program is offered complimentary just for educators and gives you resources, tools and guidance to help you navigate these changes all in one place.
  2. Once you’ve activated your Student Loan Solutions account, link your existing loans and complete the Strategy Finder. This will tell you the type(s) of student loans you currently have so you can determine what to do next.
  3. Based on your current loan status, take the appropriate action item(s).
