Savings and Retirement

How’s your retirement outlook?

If you’re like most people, you don’t plan on working until you no longer can. You’d like to have the financial means to retire on your own terms. And yet, according to a 2021 Bankrate survey, more than 52% of working Americans say their retirement savings are not what they need to be, and 23% aren’t saving anything at all.

Further, a 2023 survey by wealth management company Schroders indicated only 24% of Americans reaching retirement age believe they have saved enough, and 69% of those age 45 and up worry about money every day.

It all comes down to the money you’ll have when you retire.

So where will your retirement income come from?

  • You may have a pension, but most pensions only replace a portion of your working income.
  • Some people will have access to Social Security, while others won’t.
  • You may also have a retirement plan available through your employer. Are you contributing to it? Should you consider increasing it to make sure you’ll have enough?

Consider all the income you may have available to you and decide if it will be enough to live the lifestyle you want in retirement. If you have more questions than answers, now would be a good time to put together a retirement strategy and pull all your retirement income pieces into a cohesive plan. Your Horace Mann representative can help you with that. And if a supplemental savings source would help, your representative can assist in setting that up, too.
