School parking lot break-ins: What educators should know about insurance and prevention

Teachers often carry important items between home and school. Laptops, books, instruments and classroom supplies may travel with them every day. But when those items are left visible inside a parked vehicle, they can become an easy target for theft. Knowing how insurance may respond and taking a few simple precautions can help you protect your vehicle and the materials that support your classroom.
What insurance may cover after a car break-in
Damage to your vehicle
If someone breaks a window, damages a lock or harms your vehicle while attempting a theft, Other Than Collision coverage (sometimes called Comprehensive coverage) generally helps pay for covered repairs. Other Than Collision coverage is optional and a deductible normally applies. Collision and liability coverage generally do not pay for damage caused by theft or a break-in.
Belongings stolen from inside
Standard auto insurance typically does not cover loose personal belongings stolen from a vehicle, such as a laptop, phone, bag or other portable item. Homeowners or renters insurance may cover personal property away from home, subject to the policy’s deductible, limits and exclusions.
That means a single break-in could involve two different claims: comprehensive auto coverage for damage to the vehicle and property coverage for stolen belongings. Before filing, speak with your insurance representative about the damage, the missing property and the deductibles that may apply.

Review your protection before you need it
A school parking lot break-in can create two separate losses: damage to your vehicle and the loss of items inside it. Reviewing both your auto and property policies now can help you understand the protection you have, the deductibles that apply and any educator-focused benefits available to you.

Frequently asked questions
Does auto insurance cover damage from a car break-in?
Other Than Collision coverage generally helps pay for damage to a covered vehicle caused by theft, vandalism or a break-in, minus any applicable deductible. Coverage depends on the policy, and Other Than Collision coverage must have been selected before the loss.
Does car insurance cover a laptop or other belongings stolen from a car?
Standard auto insurance usually does not cover loose personal belongings. Homeowners or renters insurance may provide off-premises personal property coverage, subject to policy terms, limits and deductibles.
Does Horace Mann waive the deductible after a school parking lot break-in?
Eligible policyholders may pay no deductible for covered vandalism losses on or near school property or while at a school-sponsored event. A break-in is not automatically covered; the facts of the loss and policy provisions determine what applies.
Can teaching materials stolen from a car be covered?
Eligible Horace Mann auto policyholders may receive up to $2,500* in coverage for items used in their work as an educator that are stolen or damaged while in the car.
